Hello,

Our 21 year old son Micheler has been nonverbal since birth. Through gestures, a few words in sign language and the use of pic symbols in school, his freedom of expressing himself was very limited. CAYA came on board with him in December 2013 and communication, words, vocabulary and everyday life became alive for him.

He carries his augmentative device with him where ever he is, goes and travels. He does not leave home without it. 24/7 this little treasure travels around his neck, on his lap, tables and tops, always a part of him now. It has been so exciting and rewarding to see him explore and express his needs and wants so clearly. He has amazed all of us, family and caregivers, with his tenacity, eagerness, willingness and delight in learning how to communicate his needs, requests and desires with words. As he is very active in the community the device plays a very big specific and important role. From bowling, keeping track of players, scorekeeping, to deciding what and where he would like to eat and dine. He even participates in conversation regarding different subjects letting us know he is aware and willing to be a part of the topic.

He loves to engage other people in his new found talent of communicating and is always eager to introduce himself and then show them how well he can talk with them. He has even discovered new and wonderful things like making milkshakes all the time….we had no idea he liked them so much!! We are still growing and learning day by day, exploring the wonderful world of talking and communication. He constantly surprises and amazes us and we are very proud of how quickly he has adapted to this and his zest for wanting to learn more all the time.

We are so happy for you Micheler and so proud of your accomplishments! Thank you CAYA for all your support and encouragement!
